So I decided to help him out by finding and installing Appleworks 6. Luckily I found old eMac software restore DVDs (1-3). Appleworks only came in a bundle with eMac, iMac or iBook but not with Pro series Macs (like Power Macs).
However, I bumped into a hurdle when I tried to use this restore DVD in Power Mac G4 MDD or ibook G4 (I think you can install and use Appleworks up to 10.5 easily). It refuses to install because it's not a eMac. I threw away eMac ages ago......
If you have one of this software restore disc, most of the contents are invisible in Finder as they are hidden files. So I open the Terminal program in Utilities folder. Then type in this command (you can copy paste it). The first command let you see the hidden files:
defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
Now you must reopen the Finder to make the changes take effect:
killall Finder
Viola, you can see all the hidden goodies in the restore DVD. Make sure you put Disc 1, your appleworks is in ".image" folder. Just copy "Appleworks.dmg" to your hard drive or USB drive.
When you're all done copying "Appleworks.dmg" from the DVD, you have to type in this command to hide those hidden files.
defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
Again you must reopen the Finder to make the changes take effect:
killall Finder
You're done. You can install Appleworks by double clicking this Appleworks.dmg.
Enjoy!
P.S. If you can't find any software restore discs, I think some vendors still sell those bundled discs. I guess this program is still popular??? (in some schools?)
But who wants to pay for them. You can also tried to get them from here or there.
